The jury is still out on how the Gen 6 will race in larger packs but many hope those questions will be better answered by the Duels today at Daytona. The Sprint Unlimited didn’t yield a lot of input simply because almost half the field was taken out by lap fifteen and the rest of the race saw a lot of single file, follow the leader laps and, at least from this fan’s view, wasn’t exactly what I was hoping to see from the new Gen 6 cars.
I have heard a lot of comments on how great the racing is from certain people over the last several days (including during the Unlimited race Satruday night) and, I have to be honest, I simply don’t agree. So far (and I do realize one race with an early “Big One” is not much to judge by) the Gen 6 has been a bit disappointing to this fan.
Take, for example, the accidents that have been happening during practice times and the Unlimited. You see, I don’t see it the way some do. I do think part of the problem is the drivers need to adjust to the tendency of the new car to slow more quickly than they are expecting as they get a bit of a run on a car next to them. In the past, once they had the run they could generally pull down in front othe other car. Now it apppears (at least to this fan and former local track driver) that the wall of air they hit immediately affects their momentum and they misjudge the clearance of the car they were trying to pass resulting in contact.
(Of course this is just an observation also), it does appear, also from this fan’s view, the cars are even more affected by the aero dynamics of the cars at their left rear quarter panel than they were last year. I guess it remains to be seen whether or not the drivers find a way to compensate for the air taken off the spoiler and the rear ends breaking loose without wrecking too many more cars.
Don’t know about you, but I for one, have already grown weary of the talk about the Danica/RickyS “dating issue” going on. Good grief, there’s plenty going on with everything else. I don’t really need a running update on how they treat each other on or off the track and speculation on what will happen when one has to run with – or pass – the other one on the track. I say let it go… there’s plenty of time for that later.
Danica is a very talented driver and made history by winning the pole for the Daytona 500 we’ll see on Sunday. I have always thought she was good for NASCAR and she continues to prove she is. Can’t we just watch her race along with the best in the business and let the other things take care of themselves… ?
I don’t know about you, but I am sure the two Duels today will be extremely interesting for all involved. The Gen 6 car is new and different and will take some time for the drivers to figure out all the nuances about about it. I reckon we’ll all know more by dark tonight about how the Gen 6 races in the draft, or at least, I (and many others) do too.
See ya next time…
